Walking among Tokaj’s vineyards, you can feel that every sip here tells a story. Long before the Hungarian Conquest, grapevines were already clinging to the region’s volcanic rock, and beneath the sun’s golden veil something slowly came into being—something that would forever change the world of wine. Tokaj became the world’s first enclosed wine region—a place where the harmony of nature and human hands creates miracles.
The name Tokaj-Hegyalja was born from the town of Tokaj and the surrounding Hegyalja hills. Today, 27 villages are home to this remarkable wine region, where each vineyard has its own character, its own mood.
Tokaj’s classic grape varieties—Furmint, Hárslevelű, and Sárgamuskotály—create a delicate balance: the minerality of volcanic soils and the wines’ elegant acidity evoke, all at once, the strength and fragility of the feminine spirit.
Here, on the banks of the Bodrog, a miracle is born each year: noble rot, Botrytis cinerea, turns grapes into gold, creating Tokaji Aszú—one of the world’s most noble wines.
The cellars carved into rhyolite tuff are lined with a silky, velvety cellar mould that creates a unique microclimate. Here, slowly and patiently, wines take shape—wines that carry the scent of fresh bread, the softness of honey, and the warmth of sunlight in every taste.
Tokaj is not just a place on the map - Tokaj is a feeling.
The Zichy Legacy — In the Heart of Tokaj
The story of the Tokaj Zichy Vineyard Estate is tied to Count Aladár Zichy, who purchased his first Tokaj vineyards from the highly respected Waldbott family. Today, the estate spans nearly 30 hectares, where Tokaj’s noblest varieties—Furmint, Hárslevelű, and Sárgamuskotály—pass the baton from season to season.
The vineyards lie on the borders of Mád, Tarcal, Szegi, and Sárospatak—each with a distinct character, yet all with the same purpose: to reveal the beauty of Tokaj’s unparalleled terroir.
THE FIRST SPARKLING WINE
Carefully executed vineyard renewals and modern winemaking technology laid the foundation for a new chapter in the estate’s life in 2015—with the birth of the winery.
A truly special moment arrived when, from the 2019 vintage, the first Zichy Anna sparkling wine was born—the estate’s first release to enter commercial distribution. A sparkling wine in which the soul of Tokaj’s vineyards, feminine sensitivity, and classic elegance meet.
The name Zichy has, for centuries, been synonymous with patriotism, the advancement of society, and the patronage of culture and the arts. From this rich legacy, the ZICHY ANNA Sparkling Wine House was born—opening a new chapter today in the Tokaj Wine Region.
Sparkling Wine Making
Our vineyards are located across three different villages and vineyard sites—Mád, Tarcal, and Szegi—where differences in soil composition and microclimate give each harvest its own distinctive character.
For the production of our base wine, every year we carry out a carefully selected harvest, tailored to the unique characteristics of the vintage.
Vine load is carefully adjusted to meet the specific demands of sparkling wine production, ensuring that alongside optimal ripeness, the grapes retain the perfect balance of acidity and sugar — an essential foundation of refined sparkling wines.
